Texas School System to Take Sexually Explicit Books Out of Libraries Following Weeks of Pressure

Updated: Mar 15

PLANO, Texas – Plano ISD says they will remove dozens of sexually explicit books from school libraries following weeks of pressure from a local nonprofit and concerned citizens.

In an email to parents, the Plano ISD’s Director of Learning Resources said, “..we are committed to our community values, the wellbeing of our students, and do not condone having any sexually explicit content in our libraries or schools.” The email included a link to the schools library materials review page which indicates that 64 of the 67 explicit books in question have been identified for removal.

Citizens Defending Freedom, a nonprofit focused on engaging members of the community to stand up and defend their rights, has been working with members of the community to raise awareness of this issue for months. A list of sexually explicit books was submitted to the school district in May but little was done to address the issue. CDF Collin County Education Division Lead, Shannon Ayres, started a social media campaign, with memes created by a concerned citizen, showing the sexual content of the books available to students.

At a board meeting in October, many Collin County residents read excerpts from the books in question to the Plano ISD Superintendent and board members. The video of this meeting went viral on social media.

The issue of sexually explicit books in school libraries has been of great concern around the country lately. Citizens Defending Freedom and many other grassroots organizations are actively raising awareness to remove sexually explicit books from school libraries.

"It is our hope at CDF that other districts in the county will learn from what has occurred in Plano and will follow their lead in removing this filth from their library collections." said Shannon Ayres, CDF Collin County Education Division Lead.
