IRS Decision Reaffirms the Church’s Voice in the Public Square

In a major win for religious liberty and free speech, the IRS has now formally acknowledged
what many of us have long asserted: that churches can speak freely to their congregations
about political candidates without fear of government retribution. This new guidance—
prompted by a legal challenge from two Texas churches and a Christian broadcasters’
association—recognizes such endorsements as internal, faith-based expressions rather than
violations of the so-called “Johnson Amendment.”
For decades, the Johnson Amendment has chilled free expression in churches, wrongly
implying that tax-exempt status depends on pastors staying silent on civic matters. But now,
the IRS is conceding that political speech during religious services is more akin to a “family
discussion” than a campaign rally—a long-overdue distinction that affirms the constitutional
right of churches to engage on issues that shape our communities and culture.
Critics claim this ruling opens the door to corruption or misuse of nonprofit status. But let’s beclear: this isn’t about campaign finance. It’s about the right of pastors to speak boldly from
the pulpit without fear of the IRS dictating what can and cannot be said about the moral
direction of our nation.
As Christians, we must not shy away from the public square. This moment is a call to steward
our influence wisely—to champion righteousness, defend truth, and remind America that the
Church is not a silent bystander, but a moral compass.
