MEMORANDUM ON SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL): AN EXAMINATION UNDER FLORIDA LAW

Parents of children in Florida public schools have encountered SEL curriculum that contradicts their religious or moral beliefs, exposing students to topics like sexual orientation, gender identity, and critical race theory without clear parental consent, violating Florida law. The Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), which promotes SEL as a tool for equity, significantly influences state SEL providers. This approach encourages teaching about oppression and politicized identity categories, aiming to create justice-oriented citizens.

On April 19, 2024, the Biden administration usurped the United States Congress by expanding the plain meaning of “on the basis of sex” discrimination to implicate sexual orientation and gender identity. A final version of this rule was published in the Federal Register on April 29, 2024 and may be viewed here.
