Citizens Defending Freedom Calls for Action Following Nassau School District Settlement on Obscene Books

Updated: Sep 27

NASSAU COUNTY, FLORIDA – Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF) expresses deep concern following the Nassau School District’s decision to settle a lawsuit by reinstating books previously deemed in violation of Florida Statutes on obscenity (847.001 and 847.012). In a controversial move, the district has chosen to return books to the shelves that its own rating system found to be in violation of Florida's obscenity laws, creating alarm among parents and guardians who trust their schools to protect children from inappropriate content.

“This is a troubling outcome,” stated Jack Knocke, Nassau County CDF Executive Director. “The school district acknowledged that these books violate Florida statutes, yet they have chosen to place them back on the shelves, providing children access to obscene material.”

Citizens Defending Freedom is calling on Governor Ron DeSantis to intervene and take decisive action by removing the Nassau County School Board and Superintendent. Their decision to reinstate these books, despite their own findings that they violate state law, demonstrates a failure to uphold their duty to protect students and ensure a safe educational environment. “We believe this decision warrants immediate action from the Governor. The school board and superintendent have neglected their responsibilities, and it is time for new leadership that prioritizes the safety and integrity of our schools,” added Knocke.

In response to this settlement, CDF has also made the Nassau County Sheriff aware, highlighting the district’s own admission of the presence of obscene materials in schools and shared the district’s own findings as evidence that they are distributing materials in violation of Florida’s child obscenity laws. “By their own words, the Nassau School District has determined these books violate state law. Yet, rather than take corrective action, they’ve chosen to put them back in the hands of our children. We intend to hold them accountable,” said Sarah Calamunci, CDF Florida State Director.

Citizens Defending Freedom remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the innocence of children and ensuring that schools are free of harmful, obscene material. This settlement serves as a stark wake-up call to parents and concerned citizens about the need for vigilance in protecting children from inappropriate content in schools.
