We had a major victory this session: House Bill 1539 (HB 1539), "Materials Harmful to Minors," sponsored by Rep. Bankson, passed the Florida House 81-29. This critical bill would have closed a loophole that allows pornographic content to remain in public school libraries under the pretense of “literary value.”
Despite strong momentum, Senate President Albritton and Rules Chair Sen. Passidomo did not schedule the bill for a Senate vote, preventing it from becoming law.
Throughout the session, Florida CDF led the charge—drafting stronger bill language, speaking at committee meetings, distributing key resources and book excerpts to lawmakers, rallying partner organizations, and driving citizen engagement through statewide calls to action. Our "What's Really in the Florida Public School Libraries" resource was referenced multiple times in House committee meetings and on the House floor.
Thank you to every Floridian who shared our materials, contacted legislators, and stood with us. This win in the House is yours, too.
We’re not stopping here. This summer, we’ll continue meeting with legislators and working with bill sponsors to ensure HB 1539 crosses the finish line next session.
Help us keep up the fight. Support our mission to defend parental rights and protect children from harmful materials in Florida schools.
Florida CDF remains on the front lines—including in our ongoing lawsuit against Polk County Schools for failing to safeguard children from obscene content.
