Texas Hearing Erupts as Activist Denounces Effort to Protect Kids from Sexually Explicit Books

Updated: 3 days ago

A Texas House committee hearing meant to address child safety in school libraries quickly descended into chaos when a transgender activist testifying against Senate Bill 13 lashed out at lawmakers, parents, and the broader community supporting the measure.

SB 13, authored by Sen. Angela Paxton, aims to close enforcement gaps left by last session’s READER Act by prohibiting sexually explicit and profane content in school libraries, increasing transparency, and empowering parents to challenge inappropriate material. Despite these measured provisions—backed by parents across the state— activists accused lawmakers of engaging in censorship and culture wars.

During the hearing, one activist, identifying as transgender, referred to concerned parents as “bigoted busybodies” and claimed the bill would empower anyone in a school district to waste time and resources challenging books they don’t like. When the committee chair asked for decorum and respectful testimony, the activist ignored the request—lashing out at “the Abbott goon squad” and claiming Texas voters had “overwhelmingly rejected” candidates who support book removals.

The irony is glaring. While SB 13 opponents decry so-called censorship, they show open contempt for the faith, values, and voices of parents simply asking for age-appropriate standards in public schools.

Citizens Defending Freedom was proud to testify in support of SB 13—standing alongside parents who refuse to back down from protecting the innocence of children. When efforts to safeguard minors are met with slurs and scorn, it’s a sobering reminder that the fight for truth and parental rights in education is far from over.
