In North Texas, a quiet development projectĀ called EPIC City is drawing national attentionā
and for good reason. Marketed as a āsafe, purpose-built community to serve the growing
needs of a Muslim community,ā the project is spearheaded by EPIC Community Capital
Partner, a nonprofit set up by the East Plano Islamic Center. The plans include hundreds of
residential lots, a mosque, a private school, and commercial space.
While the developers insist the project is open to all and will follow Texas and federal laws,
the stated goal of creating a āMuslim neighborhoodā raises legitimate questions. Can a
religiously oriented development, run by a nonprofit tied to a mosque, remain neutral in
practice? Or will religious lawāspecifically Shariahāinevitably shape the culture and norms
of the community?
As Christians, we believe in religious liberty for all. But that liberty must be held in balance
with the rule of law and the Christian values that have long undergirded American public life.
Texas officials are right to investigate. Communities shaped by parallel legal systemsāno
matter how quietlyārisk undermining the social cohesion and constitutional order we all
depend on.
